07.30.09 PCE Open House Draws Over 200 To See Elation EVLED Video Screens In Action |
View>> |
Description: HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – When you’ve got a better mousetrap . . . show it off! That’s what Pacific Coast Entertainment (PCE) did recently when it invited clients and prospective customers to attend an open house to view the new EVLED 1024SMD 20mm LED Video Panels from Elation Professional.
A full-service lighting, audio and video production and rental company, PCE had purchased 48 of the Elation panels, which are modular in design and can be used to create vibrant video pixel screens, curtains and backdrops. Measuring 2’1” x 2’1” x 3”, the transparent tiles are compact and lightweight, and with an IP65 rating, can be used indoors or outdoors.
PCE felt that these features -- along with the EVLED panels’ surprisingly low price – made them truly unique, so the company decided to host the open house to demo the product – which it refers to simply as The Wall. “We wanted to get the word out about The Wall, because it creates new possibilities for our existing clients, as well as opens opportunities for us to sell new markets,” said Ryan Steidinger, PCE’s Director of Operations.
“Because of the price point of the Elation product, we can now offer a rental rate that is a lot lower than many of our competitors’ video screens,” added Steidinger. “This enables us to get The Wall into different markets where people have never before been able to afford a video screen. For example, many colleges and high schools would love to have an LED wall to show the kids during graduation and homecoming football games. Now we’re able to bring them one – just like they’d see at the Staples Center -- at a cost-effective rental rate.”
Over 200 people attended PCE’s day-long open house, which was held at its Huntington Beach, CA facility and featured a barbeque lunch. Attendees got to view the versatile EVLED panels in different settings, so they could get an idea of the product’s wide range of applications.
Forty of the tiles were used to create a giant outdoor screen. The panels have an integrated rigging/hanging system that allows users to easily assemble any size video screen, large or small. Up to 16 pieces can be linked on 1 AC circuit, and as many as 1,000 pieces can be run from one Ethernet video output using Elation’s ELED VSC driver (sold separately). Those attending the open house got to see firsthand how the EVLED screen’s easy setup and daylight viewability make it an ideal solution for outdoor concerts, festivals and events that take place before sundown.
EVLED tiles were also on display indoors. Here, said Steidinger, they were shown in more of a set-type application. “We did some individual hangs, running eye candy graphics on them.
“Showing the tiles in different applications was very helpful for clients,” added Steidinger. “They’d see The Wall outside, then they’d look inside and say, ‘Wow, there’s so much more I can do with this.” Because of this versatility and the low price point, Steidinger believes that the EVLED panels are not only a rental item, but also a product that many customers will want to purchase.
Although The Wall was the star of the day, other Elation products were also on display at PCE’s open house, including dimmer packs; the Design series DMX moving heads; Elation Architectural LEDs; and the Impression and Impression XL LED moving heads. One product that “caught a lot of attention,” said Steidinger, was the Antari DNG-200 Low Fog Generator, which produces a low-lying fog effect without requiring the use of dry ice.
“We had never done an open house before, and we were very, very pleased with the results all the way around,” said Steidinger. “We were making deals with clients and getting a lot of rentals set up.
“We’re also very happy with the way Elation helped us put this event together -- Eric Loader and Ray Villasenor from their company put in a tremendous amount of work. We try to make our customers happy, and it’s really great when we have vendors that work with us.”

07.24.09 Charlotte's Cosmos Restaurant Expands With Acclaim Lighting |
View>> |
Description:
BALLANTYNE, NC -- When downtown Charlotte, North Carolina’s popular Cosmos restaurant opened a second branch in suburban Ballantyne, the owners were counting on the reputation of their French fusion-style cuisine to jump-start the new location. What they didn’t expect was that after the anticipated dinner rush cleared around 9 pm, the new Cosmos Café would get a second wind, transmuting into a wildly popular, energized nightspot.
One reason for Cosmos’ spontaneous splash into the area’s bar/nightlife scene is its highly animated atmosphere, capped off by color-changing LED lighting effects from Acclaim Lighting. So stunning are the lights that even a local food reviewer was compelled to write: “Even the lighting is neat – the lights fade from green, to blue, to red . . .When you go to visit, be sure to ask about the décor.”
Jack Kelly of Eye Dialogue Lighting & Sound (Charlotte, NC) used 235 Acclaim X-Stick-12RGB strip LED fixtures to create Cosmos’ color-changing effects. The X-Sticks were installed in the restaurant’s ceiling panels, as well as in a large, overhead spear-like scenic element called the “comet,” which hangs from the ceiling.
Nearly 60’ long and made of white plexiglass, the comet is the visual centerpiece of Cosmos. Abstractly designed with a taller front section that tapers down to a tail, it is a declaration of the establishment’s cosmic theme. “(The owners) wanted the comet to glow,” said Kelly. “The other thing they wanted to accent were rows of ceiling panels that go off to the side of the comet.”
According to Kelly, using the X-Stick, a compact-profile DMX-controllable strip containing 12 SMD LEDs, helped him achieve an even spread of lighting throughout the comet and ceiling panels. One issue he had to address was the presence of ceiling wood blocks that could cast shadows on the comet. “When we looked inside the comet, we were like, ‘How do we get around those wood block shadows,’” said Kelly. “The way we got around it was by having multiple lights inside it, instead of one powerful light.”
Measuring just 13.6” long by 0.9” wide by 0.9” high, the slim X-Stick was an ideal size for configuring in multiples inside the comet to eliminate shadows. To account for the comet’s tapered shape – larger at the front and smallest at its pointed tail – different-size runs of X-Sticks were installed in different sections. “We did 4 runs of X-Sticks in the first 17’ of the comet, 3 runs of X-Sticks in the next 17’, and 2 runs in the next 17’” Kelly explained. “Then we filled in with a few X-Sticks in the tail section. This was how we got a nice, even spread throughout the whole thing.”
Cosmos’ plexiglass panels had similar issues with ceiling wood blocks, which the X-Stick’s trim shape helped solve. On the 8’ wide panel – the wider of the two – Kelly was initially going to install one line of X-Sticks down the length of each side and have them “shooting across the middle.” But here again, the wood blocks would have produced shadows in the panel’s mid-section. So Kelly wound up installing some “filler” X-Sticks in the wood blocks themselves, which worked well to create an even, shadow-free wash on the panel.
Another unique feature of Cosmos’ décor are pictures on the wall that change colors. Kelly created this color-changing effect by framing the pictures with an LED product from Acclaim’s sister company Elation Professional – Flex LED RGB WP Tape. A very thin, high-output DMX-compatible LED circuit strip that comes in spools, Flex RGB Tape has 3 SMD LEDs every 2” and can be cut to desired length. “We just wrapped the Flex Tape around on the inside of each picture,” detailed Kelly. “They kept changing the dimension and shape of the pictures, so we weren’t sure what we would need. Flex Tape is so flexible and easy to install that it allowed us to be ready for anything.”
With its flexible LED lighting, Cosmos, too, is ready for anything – from early-evening laid-back dining, to a more ramped-up nightlife atmosphere. “Early in the night we typically pick a color theme such as red and do some slow, subtle color changes into maybe shades of orange within each block of the comet,” said Kelly. “Then once the bar gets kicking in, we have much more intense programs with faster color changes, strobing and things that are a little more interesting.”
Best of all, added Kelly, this was all accomplished well within the client’s budget. The Acclaim X-Stick-12RGB “gave us everything we needed at the price point we needed to reach.”

| Description: Global Truss's New GT-Plasma MT-12 Mount Safely Holds Video Monitors in Place On Trussing
LOS ANGELES – Video is an essential component of retail and trade show displays today, and as monitors get larger and more expensive, finding a secure way to mount them has become a priority. The GT-Plasma MT-12 Plasma and LCD TV Mount from Global Truss provides that security in a lightweight and convenient mount designed to let the video – not the equipment – be the star.
There are no worries about the security of an expensive monitor when using the GT-Plasma MT-12. The heavy-duty, 2” diameter, meter-long brushed aluminum alloy bar is ideal for attaching any 42- to 50-inch plasma or LCD-screen TV to standard square truss. The bar’s light weight and simple mounting allow for quick set-up and easy transport, while its rugged strength and secure attachment offer confidence that the monitor is safely attached to the truss. The GT-Plasma MT-12 easily attaches to square truss with two Narrow Clamps; a monitor is held securely in place with two Mini 360 Clamps. All required clamps are included with the mount. The placement of the clamps completely hides the bar behind the monitor while in use, creating a smooth, uninterrupted visual appearance, allowing viewers to concentrate on the video content, rather than the monitor set up.
Like other Global Truss products, the GT-Plasma MT-12 is made from high-strength 6082-T6 extruded aluminum alloy – a material so strong, rigid and corrosion-resistant that it is used by the aviation industry for aircraft construction.
“Because video monitors are being used more in displays, and are getting larger and more expensive, we wanted to develop a product that would provide our customers with a worry-free, secure mount that was easy to use, just like our truss” said Ken Kahn, national sales manager of Global Truss. “With the introduction of the GT-Plasma MT-12, our customers have just that – a video mounting solution that's as reliable, convenient and easy to work with as our popular, dependable truss.”
Known for its lightweight, easy-to-use products, Global Truss offers a complete line of square, triangular, I-Beam and circular truss in a variety of lengths, along with corners, cross, T-junctions and other accessories. The truss is made from high-strength 6082-T6 extruded aluminum alloy and utilizes Global Truss’ famous conical coupling system. Developed from “mouse key” technology used in oil rig structures, this unique connector adds to the overall strength of the truss by helping to maintain rigidity, particularly at key stress points. The conical coupling and genderless connectors offer greater versatility and more rigging options. One end of connecting hardware is included with each truss segment.
The MSRP of the GT-Plasma MT-12 Plasma and LCD TV Mount is $150.00. For more information, contact Global Truss America at (323) 415-6225, or visit www.globaltruss.com | | Date Posted: July 23 2009 |

View>> |
Description: "Green" Lamps are available in 2 whites -- Warm or Neutral
LOS ANGELES –Elation Professional is making it easier than ever for homes and businesses to switch over to the “green” benefits of LED lighting. The company has introduced a new line of energy-efficient, long-lasting, standard-size MR16 replacement white LED lamps – the ELED MR16 5W Series.
in 0pt" class="MsoNormal">Available in both dimmable 12V bi-pin and E27 medium screw base versions, the ELED MR16 5W lamps are powered by 5 watts of high-output Nichia LEDs – the equivalent of a 50W halogen bulb. Yet they consume a maximum of 5 watts of power, so they will significantly reduce users’ electric bills, providing a return on investment in a very short time. Another bright spot for lighting users -- and the environment – is the LEDs’ long life, rated at 40,000 hours, which will drastically cut lamp replacement costs and reduce the amount of waste going into landfills.
Both lamp-base versions are offered in Warm White (2,700K) and Neutral White (3,500K), and in choice of either 30° or 60° beam angle. This versatility, combined with their powerful output and the dimming capability of the bi-pin version, make the ELED MR16 5W lamps ideal for a wide range of applications – from offices and stores, to hotels and restaurants, and even private homes.
“As energy costs and environmental concerns have risen, more business operators and homeowners are finding that it makes sense to switch to an LED light source,” said Eric Loader, Director of Sales for Elation Professional. “The trend will only continue to gain momentum in the future. Our ELED MR16 5W Series was designed to offer economically-priced, easy-to-use replacement white LED lamps that deliver superior light output and can fit a variety of applications, while delivering the cost-saving and environmental benefits associated with LEDs. 07.09.09 Six Flag' Bizarro Roller Coaster Gets New Lights & Frights From Elation |
View>> |
Description:
JACKSON, NJ – Plunging 132 feet at 60 mph with its screaming passengers’ feet dangling in mid-air, the floorless Bizarro roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure has been ranked as one of the scariest rides anywhere. When the New Jersey amusement park’s management decided to upgrade and re-theme the coaster (formerly known as Medusa) earlier this year, they were looking to pump up its thrills and chills to a new level.
This goal was accomplished in part with an eye-popping lighting display using ELAR Exbar BL RGB LED bars from the Elation Architectural, the architectural lighting division of Elation Professional. Seventy strobing, RGB color-changing Exbars were installed in a series of 5 loops that riders race through immediately after surviving Bizarro’s first breathless plunge. Along with the visual “thrills” provided by the lighting, passengers experience more “chills” in the loops – literally -- being cooled down by new misting machines that were also installed as part of the upgrade.
According to Karl Wood of Entertainment Design Group (Austell, GA), which provided the lighting and scenic elements, the name Six Flags chose for the re-theming says it all: Bizarro, a DC Comics character, was Superman’s twisted alter-ego who came from a planet where everything is opposite of Earth. “(Six Flags) wanted to do something really off the wall and different than anyone else,” said Wood. “They wanted the coaster to not only ride exciting, but to look exciting with everything visually around it kind of off-kilter.”
The combination of color-changing LED lighting and mist machines provides this type of other-worldly experience. “It’s really cool at night. When you go through the loops, you can’t even see where you’re going because the mist and light obscure everything,” said Wood.
Fourteen Exbars are installed in each of the 5 loops, bringing the total used to 70. The Exbar is a 1-meter DMX-compatible RGB-mixing bar that contains 240 x 10mm LEDs (48 red, 102 green and 90 blue). Weighing just 10 lbs, it comes in rugged die-cast aluminum housing and is rated at IP44 for outdoor use.
The IP rating was one of the reasons why his company chose the Exbar, said Wood. “Not only were these lights going to be used outdoors, they were going to be installed around the misters and had to withstand moisture, so we needed an architectural fixture,” he explained. The Exbar’s IP44 rating means it is protected against liquid sprays from multi directions, as well as solid objects as small as 1mm in thickness. What’s more, reported Wood, although very lightweight, the Exbars are strong and resilient enough to withstand the roller coaster’s vibrations when mounted on the trussing.
But strength and moisture-protection aren’t the only benefits provided by the Exbar. The fixture’s intense brightness, RGB color-changing, and features such as strobing and 0-100% dimming create the perfect visual effects to ramp up the thrills on the revamped Bizarro. “There are approximately 30 minutes of different patterns, chases, color rolls, strobing effects and corkscrews,” said Wood. “They’re on a continuous loop. When the coaster stops and starts up again, the lights pick up where they left off. You can go on the ride 15 times and have 15 different visual experiences.”
The program data is stored to memory in a DMX recorder housed in a waterproof container, and can be set in motion or shut down with the flick of a switch, along with Bizarro’s misters and other theming elements. “It’s a turnkey operation,” said Wood. “Anyone who can flip a switch can make it work.”

HUNTSVILLE, AL – The Davidson Center For Space Exploration in Huntsville, AL is home to the original Saturn V rocket, which launched the Apollo moon missions back in the 1960s. The massive 300 ft. long craft is suspended from above, giving the museum’s visitors the opportunity to walk underneath the space vehicle that was ranked as one of the “7 Wonders of America” by Good Morning America. With the 68,200 sq ft. museum also housing a 350-seat auditorium and commercial kitchen, it’s no wonder that the Davidson Center has been a popular venue for events of all kinds since it opened in 2008. So when Sutherland Sight and Sound (Sheffield, AL) was called on to provide lighting for a presentation program at Davidson hosted by Oakwood College, the production company wanted to make it a truly cosmic event.
“The college pretty much gave us free rein about how to light their production,” said Josh Johnston of Sutherland Sight and Sound. “The Davidson Center is part of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, where they hold Space Camp. So we wanted the lighting to play on the ‘spacey’ theme.” Another consideration was that the production’s cost had to be kept within the college’s trim budget. Johnston was able to accomplish both missions, thanks to some out-of-this-world fixtures from American DJ and its sister company Elation Professional.
Inside the Davidson Center, the lighting designer used 8 ADJ Mega Bar LED color-changing bars, 2 ADJ Galaxian red and green laser effects, 4 ADJ Par 64 LED Pro par cans and 2 Elation Design Spot 575 moving heads. The par cans and moving lights were hung on trussing from another sister company, Global Truss. An additional 4 ADJ Mega Bar Pros were used to light the outside of the building. The whole production was run with Elation’s Compu 2048FC PC-based lighting control software.
Wanting to showcase the museum’s main attraction, the Saturn V rocket, Johnston beamed the 2 Galaxians onto it. A “solar system” type laser effect, each Galaxian unit produces over 500 red and green laser patterns, making it ideal for covering the surface of the massive spacecraft. “The Saturn V hangs from the ceiling and we wanted to draw attention to it,” said Johnston. “The Galaxian’s awesome shower of beams certainly did that -- even its name is perfect for a fixture used to light a rocket!”
Another fixture that contributed to the outer-space theme was the Elation Design Spot 575, an intelligent 575W CMY color-mixing moving head that’s loaded with gobo patterns and effects. One of its built-in gobos resembles the shape of a moon, says Johnston, and the unit also features a 15°-30° linear zoom. “We used the zoom to change the size of the moon gobo pattern,” said Johnston. “One of the reasons we chose the Design Spot 575 was because of the zoom -- when you’re in a facility so large, the zoom could make the gobo appear huge. When you’re doing a space design, and you’ve got a moon that goes from being small to huge, it’s just an incredible effect.”
The stage itself was illuminated with ADJ LED RGB color-mixing fixtures. The Mega Bar LED, an ultra-bright color bar containing 252 red, green and blue 10mm LEDs, cast changing colors onto the stage’s scenic elements, which included large sconces on each side. Johnston chose the Mega Bar LED because “it’s the best thing for the budget out there. You get a nice, even wash and it’s super useful. You can do anything from face it toward the audience and run effects, to washing walls.” ADJ’s 64B LED Pro par cans were flown overhead on SQ-4114 square truss from Global Truss. “We use Global Truss because all of their products are in stock all the time, so there’s never any waiting to get them. They have excellent customer service, their product is at a price point that’s very affordable – and it works,” said Johnston.
To wash the exterior of the building, Johnston used ADJ’s Mega Bar Pro, a brighter version of the Mega Bar LED, containing larger, more powerful 1W LEDs. “We needed to shoot as far up the building as possible, and the Mega Bar Pro is an inexpensive solution, especially when you’re doing an outdoor event,” he said. “It has a really long throw distance – I can put those out and be able to wash a great distance.”
As he does much of the time, Johnston used Elation Compu 2048 FC PC-based software to control the lighting. In today’s era of LED-powered fixtures, he says, “it’s not practical to use a console with the amount of DMX channels you’re taking up. I pretty much always use Compu software now – whether it’s the church market, the theater market, any market.”
Compu software is also easier for most end-users to operate than a DMX console, Johnston pointed out. “Unless it’s a professional venue, the people who are running the lighting are typically volunteers and not very experienced with controllers. So when you have a visual interface like with Compu, and can actually see what you’re doing, it makes it a lot easier for the customer to use.”
In other words, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist!

04.15.09 Tight Beams! Tight Budgets! Tight Spaces! Elation Introduces Ultra-Compact Design Beam 1200C, 1200W Hybrid Spot-Wash-Beam Projector With Wireless DMX |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – You might call Elation Professional’s new Design Beam 1200C CMY moving head a “dream beam” for today’s lighting designers. A 1200W hybrid that can perform as either a spot, wash or long throw beam projector, the Design Beam 1200C puts amazing versatility in the designer’s hands, while its 3-in-1 functionality provides the exceptional value demanded by today’s budget-concerned customers. Although it blasts a mighty 1200W output, it’s housed in a compact case more typical of a 575W fixture, so it can be installed in tight spaces and is very convenient to transport on tours and traveling productions.
Add in wireless DMX and a full range of professional design features, and the Design Beam 1200C truly is an innovative multi-purpose fixture for nightclubs, churches, rental houses, theaters, concerts, and other entertainment events. “We developed the Design Beam 1200C to be a complete 1200W DMX moving head that meets the demands of today’s lighting market and challenging economy,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “People are looking for ever more powerful, yet smaller fixtures. Today’s designers and clients also want versatility and value, and the Design Beam 1200C delivers with its ability to do triple-duty as a wash, spot or beam projector. This multi-functionality makes the Design Beam 1200C especially great for the rental market.
“Designers also want cutting-edge features like wireless DMX, along with lots of effects and colors,” added Loader. “We’ve included the complete ‘wish list,’ while keeping the price in line with the substantial dollar value that has become associated with Elation products.”
Powered by a Philips MSR1200 7,500k discharge lamp, the Design Beam 1200C provides extreme light output, shooting out 107,500 lux at 25’, and producing a very tight 6.7° beam angle. A Variable Frost feature allows the unit to function as either a spot or wash -- simply apply varying degrees of Frost to morph the hard edge beam into a softer wash-like effect.
Equipped with a CMY color mixing system with variable CTO color correction, the Design Beam 1200C can produce a rainbow of colors with 16-bit movement and color fading. It also features 8 static replaceable dichroic colors, including CTB and UV. Eye-popping effects can be created with the unit’s 2 gobo wheels, one containing 6 rotating/indexing gobos, and the other with 7 static replaceable gobos. A dimmer and strobe effect provide even more visual excitement.
The Design Beam 1200C can operate on 21 DMX channels standard or 30 channels in 16-bit mode. It features a built-in wireless DMX receiver that utilizes technology from world-renowned Wireless Solution Sweden AB. This allows it to receive DMX signals wirelessly from up to 3,000 feet that are sent via Elation’s EWDMXT wireless DMX transmitter (sold separately) or other wireless DMX transmitters made by Wireless Solution. From the operator’s standpoint, the DMX signals will flow reliably and without interruption, thanks to system’s Adaptive Frequency Hopping Technology, which changes frequencies 1000 times per second to stay on channels that are not in use. “Wireless DMX technology, along with the Design Beam 1200C’s compact size, make it an ideal solution for hard-to-light areas that are tight on space or where cable can’t be run for one reason or another,” noted Loader.
For those who prefer to stay wired, the Design Beam 1200C offers both 3-pin and 5-pin DMX connections. As standard with Elation’s Design Series moving heads, it includes a DMX Record mode, which allows users to record 4 different shows direct from the DMX console for playback on the unit. Plus, users can adjust the DMX profile attributes manually to emulate other fixtures if a show has been programmed already with another fixture type.
With its high output and 630° or 540° Pan and 265° selectable Tilt, the Design Beam 1200C is great for producing sweeping effects and color in larger venues when a small profile fixture is required. It measures only 18.5” x 18.2” x 20.3” and weighs just 78.5 lbs., thanks in part to a lightweight electronic ballast.
The MSRP of the Design Beam 1200C is $9,199.95.

03.23.09 Elation Provides Economic Bailout at Toronto Auto Show |
View>> |
Description: TORONTO –- In today’s troubled economy every client group is looking to hold down costs – and no one more than the Big Three auto manufacturers. When Christie Lites (Toronto) began working on plans for lighting the General Motors booth at the 2009 Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS), keeping the budget lean but replicating past year’s successful design elements was a tough order to fill.
Located in the show’s main exhibition hall at the Metro Toronto Convention Center the GM booth covered a sprawling 84,600 sq ft. On display were 104 cars and trucks from all of the company’s brands -- a myriad of offerings including Saturn, Saab and Hummer.
The original plot called for in excess of 500 fixtures to light the exhibit but the budget demands spoke to a more limited scope. Still, the overall visual integrity needed to be respected, with a solid balance between base light levels and visual punch for the featured products.
“Our inventory runs at a very high level in late winter due to the significant demands of the North American auto show circuit” said Rob Charnetski of Christie Lites. The Christie organization provides lighting for the Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Montreal, DC, Toronto and New York shows from its 9 various branch locations across North America.
When looking for the right mix of fixtures budget was definitely a big consideration, said Charnetski, but other features were also high on the list to meet the unique challenges of an auto show environment. For the Toronto GM job, these features also included having a remotely focusable daylight color temperature unit. “On most large auto booths, it really helps if you have remotely focusable lights, not only because the cars are always being moved as the booth is fine tuned, but also due to labor and access issues,” explained Charnetski. “This is especially true during the media preview, when they may typically move as many as one-third of the cars up on stage, then move them back again when the show starts.”
Exhibiting cars under daylight color temperature white is a trend that has been growing among auto manufacturers for the past several years, said Charnetski. “Of course, everything used to be limited to the standard tungsten sources, but for many years there has been more universal use of 5600K units to better render the true colors of the paint and finish – as the autos will be seen in showroom and natural environments.
Earlier in the season, the Christie team had already tested out a fixture that combined these and other relevant prerequisites. Elation Professional’s Design Par 575D is a 575W MSR type discharge fixture with a par reflector and features the full-range motion of a typical moving head fixture – 630° or 540° pan (user selectable) and 265° tilt – along with 4 lens options ranging from wide to very narrow. The Design Par does not have color mixing or other features typically found on a standard full-featured moving head, so it’s significantly less expensive without sacrificing quality.
Charnetski utilized 265 Design Par 575Ds in the GM booth – almost exclusively for the vehicle feature lighting. While at past shows GM utilized colored light from CMY fixtures to differentiate between its brands, this year the company wanted its booth to have a balanced all-white, open look. With its high color temperature and consistent field, Charnetski is pleased to confirm that the Design Par 575D really delivered.
“The client really liked the white intensity of the exhibit – the overall clean kind of look it has,” he said. “They also liked the convenience of the remote focus in a basic daylight unit – the fact that when things changed and vehicles needed to move, we just got the programmer online and made it happen in a fraction of the time than with a normal fixed focus unit”.
Even more remarkable about the Design Par 575D is that it provides all this at a great price, Charnetski added. “In an economic environment where it is no longer just a request, but a requirement to cut costs, the Design Par gave us a way to get the job done for 2009 for a very manageable price. It certainly fit our need to deliver within a very targeted budget while providing the absolute best in illumination and focus with as much flexibility as possible.”
The Design Par 575 has a solid place in the Christie Lites inventory after a successful 2008/09 season and will be a fixture to watch for on future auto show projects to come.

03.19.09 PBR Rides With Elation’s No-Bull Lighting |
View>> |
Description: PBR Rides With Elation’s No-Bull Lighting
LOS ANGELES – Any sport that bills itself as “the toughest sport on dirt” needs gear that can stand up to some seriously gritty conditions. So when the Professional Bull Riders Tour (PBR) went shopping for some new automated lights, production manager Clayton Cullen and his crew searched for a rugged, reliable fixture that could withstand the dust and dirt kicked up by 2,000-pound bulls – as well as this fast-growing sport’s intense 10-month national touring schedule.
They also needed a fixture that could handle the versatility of the PBR’s weekly televised competitive events, which are “more akin to a rock ’n roll show with beef,” says Cullen. Held in major indoor sports arenas like Madison Square Gardens and the American Airlines Center in Dallas, the shows are full-scale productions that feature not only cowboys and bull riding, but also music and special appearances by guest artists. “We never know when a major artist will stop by -- or what we’ll be doing in our shows. So we have to be very, very flexible (with lighting),” notes Cullen, whose guests have included Jewel, Clay Walker, Daughtry and Charlie Daniels. In addition to illuminating musical performances, the PBR relies on automated lights to “fill the arena with gobos and colors” as the audience walks in, and to spotlight cowboys and dignitaries during the opening introductions.
Cullen found the versatility, toughness and roadworthiness he was looking for in the Power Spot 700 II from Elation Professional. A powerful 700W DMX moving head, the Power Spot 700 II features CMY color mixing and is loaded with effects and features, including 3 gobo wheels, 2 color wheels, a 14°-23° linear zoom, variable Frost, Iris with narrow to wide beam (4%-100%), Prism and Strobing.
It was during a demo of the Power Spot 700 II at a PBR event in Anaheim, CA that Cullen and PBR lighting director Nelson Meeks really became sold on the fixture. “Elation had provided us with Power Spots to try out during the show, and we happened to have a band at the opposite end of the arena that we had to light up for an intermission segment,” recalled Cullen. “I told Nelson, all we can do is take those Elation profiles, turn them around and shoot ’em down there. He turned those things around and we shot all the way to the opposite end and lit that band literally from the far end of the arena. They did a great job. That’s the kind of versatility we need from a light fixture.”
The PBR wound up purchasing 10 Power Spot 700 II units from LB Lights West (Lodi, CA). In addition to their performance features, the compact, down-to-earth-priced fixtures proved ideal for the PBR’s virtually non-stop touring schedule and budget requirements. “The Power Spot 700 II has all of the quality and features you’d expect to find in much more expensive fixtures from very well-known suppliers,” said Pete Siegel of LB Lights West. “Yet it’s smaller in size, lighter in weight and much, much lighter on the budget.”
Cullen said his familiarity with Elation products assured him he was buying a quality light that was rugged enough to endure the bull riding events. The PBR had already been using another Elation fixture, the Design LED 12 Brick, in their shows. A high-output RGB LED color changer, the DLED 12 Brick is “literally built like a brick. You can bang it around, do whatever you want to it, and the failure rate has been totally nil,” reported Cullen.
Like the Power Spot 700 II, the DLED 12 Brick is also an extremely versatile light. Its flexibility proved especially valuable about a year ago when Jewel debuted her first country single, “Stronger Woman,” at a PBR show. “We had to decorate the stage for Jewel. So we turned some truss vertical behind her, then took the LED Bricks and mounted them inside the truss on an angle pointing out toward the camera and ran them on a color-changing program. It looked awesome.
“I am a huge fan of those LED Bricks,” added Cullen. “We use them for everything – as truss warmers, eye candy. We’ve mounted them into blinder modules and used them for audience blinders. We call them our Swiss Army Knife.”

03.17.09 Elation Impression Rocks AC/DC’s Train |
View>> |
Description:
LOS ANGELES – Fresh off the success of its multi-platinum comeback album Black Ice, which debuted at No. 1 in 29 countries, AC/DC embarked on its first concert tour in eight years. Known for its theatrics as much as its rhythm-heavy rock tunes, the band wanted to show its fans that, after 30 years in the business, AC/DC still has a flair for the spectacular. So designers for the Black Ice World Tour took inspiration from the album’s first single, “Rock ’N Roll Train,” and concocted a full-size train to come crashing through animated video screens in fiery flames to kick off the show. The massive 13,000 lb. locomotive remains on stage as a smoking centerpiece for most of the concert.
To light the train during the group’s performance, LD Cosmo Wilson, who has been with AC/DC for nearly 20 years, along with Designer Patrick Woodroffe, chose Elation Professional’s Impression RGB LED moving head. Twenty Impressions are positioned on floor stands around the base of the train. They are used to uplight the fiberglass locomotive, which sits parked at a 32° angle on top of an 8’ backline deck.
“The train is an old 1920s-style steam engine, and it becomes the centerpiece of the show until the last four songs,” said Wilson. “It smokes and we use a lot of pyro on it, but for the actual lighting of the train, which is done from the bottom, we use Impressions and nothing else.”
An extremely compact moving head that can be mounted on a 14” center, the Impression is powered by 90 Luxeon K2 LEDs that can match or exceed the output of a 575W discharge fixture. Wilson learned about the Impression from another lighting designer, Michael Keller, who made it his mainstay fixture on John Mayer’s most recent tour. “I’m a big par can guy, so I was looking for a good, bright, par-style LED light, and Michael Keller told me about the Impression,” said Wilson.
“As it turned out, we decided to use the Impression to light the train, because its profile is so small. This allowed it to fit on the backline around the train.”
Performance-wise, Wilson says that he is extremely pleased with the Impression’s brightness and rich color saturation. “It’s fantastic –it’s a really intensely bright light and the colors are great. It’s got a nice, bright beam like a par can, although we’re not using it in that type of application. It works really well on the train.”
During a song from the new album, “War Machine,” Wilson wanted to paint the train in a saturated dark green and achieve an edgy, surreal look. “I put saturated green light on the train from below with the Impression. Then from behind I put on this little corona of lavender with one of our other lights. This made the train look unreal, almost like something out of a comic book. I kept getting comments from people on how unreal the train looked. If it hadn’t been for the brightness and color saturation of the Impression, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this look.”
Wilson says that in the future, he wouldn’t hesitate to use the Impression in overhead par can-type applications. With a power draw that’s 50% less than a comparable-output 575W discharge lamp and minimal heat generation, the Impression offers the very benefits that prompted him to look for an LED light that could replace par cans to begin with.
“The problem with (traditional) par cans is that they use a lot of power and put out an immense amount of heat, especially when you’re talking 200, 300 or 500 par cans. Promoters today don’t want to pay for generators,” Wilson said. “Until now I hadn’t found an LED with a good enough beam that shoots far enough to copy what a par can does. But now that I’ve seen the brightness of the Impression, I can definitely say it would work in par can situations where it’s rigged up in the air.”

02.27.09 All-Around Performer! Elation’s Diecast IP-Rated Design LED 36 Pro Is Versatile RGB Color Changer For Indoor/Outdoor Use |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES –Although it comes in a diecast case, Elation Professional’s new IP-rated Design LED 36 Pro refuses to be “cast” in any one role. Like a chameleon, this compact, rugged and powerful LED color changer can adapt to any application, whether indoors or out, in permanent installations or traveling stage shows.
Wherever it does duty, the DLED 36 Pro will produce dazzling colors with 108 watts of high-output featuring 36 x 3-watt RGB LEDs (12 red, 12 green and 12 blue). Using a DMX controller, operators can custom blend RGB colors, putting an infinite palette at their fingertips. The DLED 36 Pro can also generate changing colors as a standalone unit, since it’s equipped with pre-programmed color macros and 8 built-in programs that can be called up with or without a DMX controller.
The unit includes a built-in 100V-240V switching power supply, and Edison power in and out and XLR in and out. “Even though it’s an IP 65-rated fixture that uses IP 65-rated cable, the connectors are regular Edison and XLR, so you don’t have to worry about using special connectors,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. Multiple units – as many as 10 -- can be power-linked together via the supplied power in/out cables each 3’ long featuring 120PPG in/out molded connectors and inked together by the attached 3-pin data cables which are 3’ in length in/out allowing you to separate the fixtures 6’ apart without any extra cabling to purchase.
Rated at a hardy IP 65, it’s virtually rain and wind-proof, making it ideal for adding color to building exteriors, landscape, pavilions, amphitheaters and outdoor concerts. Featuring a brilliant output and smooth linear RGB color mixing, it’s an equally great performer in theaters, churches, nightclubs and indoor architectural applications. It’s even small enough to fit into 12” box truss, so it can also be used as a truss warmer on stage, in exhibits and at trade shows. And it’s flicker-free and silent running, so it’s perfect for TV and film production, too.
This versatile little light also features a gel/frame holder, which lets users further customize it to their needs. Operators can add their own color correction / diffusion gels or barn doors (not included). Or they can insert the included frost filter to diffuse the unit’s narrow beam, giving a smooth even color mix.
“The DLED 36 Pro is really a tremendous value because it can be used in so many different ways,” said Loader. “It’s well-suited to all types of indoor and outdoor architectural, entertainment, exhibition and production applications -- anywhere a color changer is needed. This versatility makes the DLED 36 Pro a great piece for rental houses too. And it’s very attractively priced.”
The DLED 36 Pro comes with a standard 15° beam angle, but in keeping with its versatility, users can also purchase optional 25° and 45° lens kits (sold separately). Other features include: 0-100% dimming with linear and standard dimming options; three DMX modes – 3, 4 and 6-channel; and a versatile dual yoke mounting bracket that can either sit on the floor or be hung from truss in any safe position.
Adding to the DLED 36 Pro’s value is the long life of its LEDs, which are rated at 100,000 hours, saving users the time and expense of lamp replacement. Operators will also save on energy costs, since the DLED 36 Pro’s LEDs consume very little electricity compared to conventional halogen and discharge fixtures 5 to 10 times the power draw rating. “We have compared it color to color against 1,000Watt Par w/ primary gels and this unit puts out more light!” Another advantage of LEDs is that they generate virtually no heat, keeping performers, buildings and illuminated objects much cooler.
The DLED 36 Pro measures 8.8”L x 8”W x 10.8”H, and weighs 15.2 lbs. It has an MSRP of $1,299.95.

02.13.09 Punchy Panel! Elation’s IP65-Rated Design Panel 72IP MKII Color Wash Shines Thru All Outdoor Conditions With High-Power 3W LEDs |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – No matter what the weather, Elation Professional’s Design Panel 72IP MKII outdoor LED color wash won’t be a washout. A high-output DMX-compatible RGB-mixing LED panel, the Design Panel 72IP MKII is rated at IP 65, allowing it to withstand rain and dust, making it ideal for adding changing colors to building exteriors, landscaping, outdoor concerts, or any application subject to Mother Nature’s whims.
The brightest IP-rated color wash panel offered by Elation to date, the Design Panel 72IP MKII is also great for indoor architectural and entertainment use, thanks to its brawny output, energy efficiency and low maintenance requirements. It owes its amazing brilliance to 72 high-power Luxeon K2 LEDs – 24 red, 24 green and 24 blue – each a mighty 3 watts. This powerful output, along with the Design Panel 72IP MKII’s flicker-free and silent operation, make it perfect for video and film production too.
Using a DMX controller, operators can create millions of colors via linear RGB color-mixing. Or they can run the panel without a controller in standalone mode, selecting from built-in color macros or one of its 8 internal 48-scene programs. Multiple panels can be linked Master-Slave, with up to 16 units daisy-chained together for color washing really large areas.
“Users of outdoor lighting are demanding greater brightness,” said Eric Loader, Director of Sales for Elation Professional. “With its 3W LEDs, the Design Panel 72IP MKII is the highest output IP-rated LED color wash we have ever developed and one of the brightest you’ll find anywhere. Its IP 65 rating makes it impervious to wet outdoor conditions. 02.04.09 Hannah Montana Gets Best of Both Worlds With Elation Impression |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – Where do you find a lighting fixture that’s as ramped up and energized as the frenzied atmosphere at a Hannah Montana concert? That’s what Lee Rose of Design Partners (Burbank, CA) needed when designing lighting for a concert video shoot featuring Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana performing eight songs to be aired in the promotion of her upcoming album release and mega-hit Disney Channel series.
Held outdoors before a live – and very vocal -- audience at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA, the concert was performed on a full stage set created by Tom McPhillips of Atomic Design . One of Rose’s lighting challenges was to add excitement to four pieces of scenery used to surround video columns on the stage. “Tom (McPhillips) had come up with a set design that included four video columns,” said Rose. “The surround to each column was a piece of scenery that looked kind of lonely.”
Wanting to tie this scenery into the show’s color and movement, Rose positioned six Impression LED moving heads from Elation Professional at the base of each of the four video columns. The Impression is a compact, lightweight, energy-efficient RGB color-mixing fixture powered by 90 Luxeon K2 LEDs whose high output has been compared to a 575-watt discharge unit. However, the Impression draws about half as much electricity as a 575-watter, weighs a mere 16 lbs, and is mountable on a 14” center.
Rose, who had seen the Impression at a previous LDI show, liked a number of things about it, especially its small size. “I liked the fact that it had a small base and was a lightweight fixture with very little mass. This allows it to move at very high speeds, which gives a lot of animation to its movement,” he said.
Thanks to its compact moving mass and its state-of-the-art stepper motors, the Impression can achieve a 660° pan movement in less than 2 seconds, an astoundingly fast speed, according to Rose. But what really surprised the LD was the brilliant output of the Impression. Never having used an LED moving head before, he noted that his “concern going in was how bright was it going to be -- and that turned out to be a non-concern. I was amazed by how powerful the beam itself was coming out of the Impression. It actually turned out to be one of the punchiest fixtures we had on the set.”
Even with the concert’s tricky outdoor lighting conditions, the Impression’s output remained consistently powerful on stage, added Rose. “Normally when you do an outdoor concert, getting and keeping your atmosphere becomes an issue. You don’t always get good aerial graphics beam quality because of whatever the wind conditions happen to be. We started before dusk and went into the night, and the Impression really kept its power and punch throughout.”
Disney Channel executives and others involved with the project were also impressed with the Impression, said Rose. These included Disney Channel senior vice president of production Susette Hsiung, executive producer Skot Bright of Penn/Bright Entertainment, concert producer Eileen Bernstein, and director Linda Mendoza. “The general response from the producers was that (the Impressions) really made an impact on the overall look of the show,” said Rose.
Along with the Impression’s look, the fact that it uses LEDs – rather than a conventional discharge lamp --offered the production team a number of advantages, including a big energy savings and cool operating temperature. Rose used another Elation color-mixing LED fixture, the Opti Tri Par, to backlight the plexiglass in the base of the video columns.
One of the songs performed at the concert was a new version of the Hannah Montana theme, “Best of Both Worlds” -- a theme that’s equally appropriate for the show’s energized and powerful, yet cool and efficient LED lighting.

01.22.09 Rainbow In A Rig:Global Truss Introduces LED Truss Warmer With RGB Color-Mixing and DMX Control |
View>> |
Description:
LOS ANGELES – Global Truss America, supplier of high-quality stage and lighting trussing, has launched its first-ever lighting product – a color-changing LED truss warmer designed specifically to fit inside the company’s square truss. Powered by 9 ultra-bright 1-watt LEDs (3 red, 3, green, 3 blue LEDs), the new TW-RGB9 Truss Warmer uses RGB color mixing to turn any rig into a rainbow of colors, for an amazing uplighting effect at concerts, stage productions, nightclubs, DJ shows or any entertainment venue.
Featuring DMX-512 protocol, the TW-RGB9 can create thousands of dazzling colors, produce stunning color changes, and perform color fades with 0-100% electronic dimming. It’s also equipped with pre-programmed color macros and a built-in microphone for sound-active operation, allowing it to be used without a controller.
But what really sets the TW-RGB9 apart is that it was designed from the inside out to serve the function of a truss warmer. Compact in size yet extremely powerful, it has a unique triangular shape, which allows it to be easily inserted into F34 and F44 square truss. Another exclusive feature is the color of its case, a soft silver finish, which blends in perfectly with steel or aluminum trussing.
“There are many lights being used as truss warmers, but the TW-RGB9 is unique in that it was designed specifically for this purpose by a company whose actual expertise is in truss,” said Ken Kahn, national sales manager of Global Truss America. “Because of this, the TW-RGB9 isn’t just another great RGB color-mixing LED light, it’s also got the perfect triangular shape and small footprint to fit trussing, and it looks awesome on stage.”
The TW-RGB9 is also a very versatile light that can be used by professional lighting designers and novices alike. Equipped with 3- and 5-pin DMX connections, the 7-channel unit offers lighting pros the flexibility to blend customized colors and program their own light show with a DMX controller. But for those who don’t want to get involved with DMX, the TW-RGB9 also offers a number of exciting “plug and play” modes. There are 5 operating modes in all: Color Macro Mode, Color Fade Mode, RGB Mode, Sound-Active Mode and DMX Control Mode.
Although it’s a truss “warmer,” the TW-RGB9 will stay cool on stage, thanks to its LED lamps, which generate very little heat. This keeps the temperature more comfortable for performers on stage and club patrons on the dance floor. LEDs are also very energy efficient, and they last many times longer than halogen or discharge lamps, so the TW-RGB9 will save users money on electricity and maintenance costs.
Dealers and rental houses, too, can benefit from carrying a light that was designed as a “partner” for trussing, noted Kahn. “By displaying the TW-RGB9 with Global’s truss products, or showing it to customers who rent trussing, dealers can generate extra add-on purchases. The TW-RGB9 looks so good with truss that it pretty much sells itself,” said Kahn.
The TW-RGB9 Truss Warmer has an MSRP of $358.95.

01.08.09 Nissan Revs It Up With Elation At LA Auto Show |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – When Nissan unveiled its all-new 370Z sports car at the LA Auto Show, the company wanted to create a roar, since this marked the first major overhaul of the “Z” since 2003. The revamped roadster was given center stage in the company’s booth, featured on a turntable under a stunning circular canopy of bright, color-changing lights.
Lightswitch (www.lightswitch.net), which designed the lighting in the Nissan booth, used Elation Professional’s Impression RGB LED compact moving head fixture to spotlight the 370Z. Additionally, Lightswitch chose another Elation light to illuminate the rest of the booth, the Design Par 575D, a DMX-compatible discharge moving head fixture with a par reflector. And just like the 370Z itself, Nissan’s show lighting received rave reviews from professionals.
According to Lightswitch principal Chris Medvitz, auto shows present unique lighting challenges. The Elation products, he said, helped his company meet the design and technical requirements of its client George P. Johnson, the experience marketing agency for Nissan North America, while satisfying the specifications posed by the Los Angeles Convention Center.
One of the biggest concerns with auto show light fixtures is weight, said Medvitz, since convention centers typically have strict hanging load requirements. “Weight is a huge issue, especially at this show, because the LA Convention Center is very limiting on how much weight they’ll allow you to hang,” said Medvitz. “So we needed fixtures that were as lightweight as possible.”
Another requirement for auto show lighting is remote focusability. Exhibits tend to get changed around from day to day, so the ease of being able to adjust the beams remotely is essential. What’s more, said Lightswitch’s production manager for Nissan Chris Wasilauskas, many auto shows have a VIP event the evening before they open to the public, then the cars arrive in the middle of the night and the booth lighting has to be totally re-focused. “You have to have all your lifts and power equipment off the floor by 7 a.m.,” said Wasilauskas. “If you have 150 lights, you’re not going to make it, unless you can focus them remotely.”
Lightswitch found a solution to both the low weight and remote focusability issues in the Elation Design Par 575D. Featuring 630° pan and 265° tilt, this par-style discharge fixture has the range and movement of a moving head unit, without unnecessary features, so it’s lighter weight (42 lbs.) and less expensive. Plus, it is remotely focusable via DMX. One-hundred and sixty Design Par 575D’s were used in the Nissan booth to light the vehicles and exhibit architecture at daylight color temperature.
“The Design Par 575D gave us the ability to remotely focus and be cost-effective compared to a typical full-featured moving light, which has a lot of things we really didn’t need, such as gobos and color-changing,” said Medvitz. “And because it doesn’t have all those features, it weighs substantially less.”
Weight was also one of the reasons Lightswitch chose the Impression to highlight the star of the booth – the Nissan 370Z. At a mere 16 lbs. and compact enough to be mounted on a 14” center, the Impression delivers the output of a 575Wdischarge lamp with 90 high-output Luxeon K2 LEDs – while consuming half as much energy. It provides smooth, fast color changes via RGB mixing, and its compact mass and state-of-the-art stepper motors allow for extremely quick movements, reaching 660° pan in less than 2 seconds.
Lightswitch installed 24 Impressions in the circular truss above the 370Z, which were used as a special effect, “constantly changing colors and moving around,” said Medvitz. “The Z has a circular badge design, so they wanted to do a circular canopy with a similar design and then have a ring of automated color-changing lights on the outside,” he explained. “The Impression was key in being able to execute this because of its light weight, along with its multi-color capability, fast speed and low wattage.”
“Given the size and weight of the Impression, I was shocked at how bright they were,” added Wasilauskas. “Being so bright and being able to do so much, its very low weight was a huge bonus for us.”
At Christie Lites (www.christielites.com) , which supplied the Impressions and Design Par 575Ds, Robert Roth reported that his company has been extremely pleased with both fixtures. “Auto shows are a demanding environment. The lights are on for long periods of time. The Design Pars worked flawlessly -- they’re extremely reliable and the quality of the light is incredibly clean.
“I was stunned at the performance of the Impression,” added Roth. “It was the first fixture I’ve seen like that that actually had enough LED output to produce a par-like beam. It’s exciting to see that we’ve got affordable reliable LED product coming out that combines great theatrical color, stunning effects, quick color changes and smooth repeatable movement with a very low fixture weight.”

01.06.09 Wireless Wonders: Elation Unveils Full-Feature 1400W Moving Heads With Built-In Wireless DMX |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES -- Today’s production and touring lighting designers are demanding bigger, more powerful lighting fixtures, and Elation Professional has responded with its new Design 1400 Series DMX-512 moving heads. Each blasting a mighty 1400W output, the series includes the Design Wash 1400E, a color wash effect, and the Design Spot 1400E, which is full of colors, gobos and animated effects.
Aside from being big and bright, these brawny bros are loaded with all the features lighting designers demand, including one of today’s hottest must-haves: wireless DMX. The Design Wash 1400E and Design Spot 1400E are each equipped with a wireless DMX receiver, built right into the unit. The units can receive DMX signals wirelessly from up to 3,000 feet that are sent via Elation’s EWDMXT wireless DMX transmitter (sold separately) or other wireless DMX transmitters made by Wireless Solution Sweden AB. From the operator’s standpoint, the DMX signals will flow reliably and without interruption, thanks to wireless system’s Adaptive Frequency Hopping Technology, which changes frequencies 1000 times per second to stay on channels that are not in use.
“Our new Design 1400 Series address two major trends that are occurring in the production, touring and rental lighting markets,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “The first is the movement toward bigger and brighter fixtures. The Design 1400 Series fixtures utilize an advanced Philips MSR 1200 Fast Fit lamp, which we can drive beyond 1200W watts to get an actual output of 1400W. The units deliver this output at an excellent value – about one-third less than you might expect to pay -- without sacrificing quality or premium features.
“This gets into the second trend we addressed with the Design 1400 Series -- ‘going wireless,’” continued Loader. “Our customers have told us they want the freedom, flexibility and convenience that wireless control gives them. With wireless DMX you can avoid long data cable runs, easily add fixtures to your rig without having to run new data lines, and work in areas where it’s not possible to run cable for one reason or another. Of course, to provide this flexibility the wireless system has to operate reliably. You can be assured that this is the case with our Design 1400 Series fixtures, because they utilize technology from Wireless Solution of Sweden, which has a 20-year proven track record in the wireless DMX control business.”
Whether operated wirelessly or linked to a conventional DMX console, the Design 1400 Series fixtures offer lighting pros all the tools and features they need to run a major production. The Design Wash 1400 is a powerful color wash featuring CMY+C color mixing, plus 2 color wheels, each featuring 4 dichroic filters plus open. It has 17 DMX channels and a flexible linear beam angle of 10°-40°.
The Design Spot 1400E is an amazing color and effects machine, featuring a CMY color mixing system along with variable CTO color correction, plus interchangeable color filters, 6 dichroic color filters, CTB + white and split colors, and a continuous Color Scrolling rainbow effect. It also includes 2 rotating gobo wheels that can be used to create the popular Gobo Morphing overlay effect, as well as a multi-color dichroic gobos that can be overlain with the color wheel to produce even more colors. A rotating animation wheel and 3 rotating prisms (3-facet, 5-facet and infinity-facet) allow users to create still more effects and combos.
An extremely versatile fixture, the 25 DMX channel Design Spot 1400E includes a full-functioning Iris with pulse effect, a 12°-32° Linear Zoom, Frost Filter on the prism effect wheel, variable speed Strobe effect and 0°-100° Dimming.
Despite its full complement of features, the Design Spot 1400E is extremely easy to service because of its convenient modular construction design. “You can easily get into the unit to replace gobos or cards,” said Loader. “The fixture is completely modular for serviceability and maintenance.”
Plus, the added full color LCD display menu offers users easier access to software features and fixture personalities. As standard with Elation’s Design Series moving heads, there is a DMX record mode, which allows users to record 4 different shows direct from the DMX console for playback on each unit. Plus, users can adjust the DMX profile attributes manually to emulate other fixtures if a show has been programmed already with another fixture type.
Recent purchasers of the Design 1400 series products include Everlast Productions in Fort Lauderdale, FL and the Berry Center in Houston, TX.
The Design Wash 1400E measures 24.8”L x 21.1”W x 22.6”H and weighs 110 lbs. The Design Spot 1400E measures 19”L x 14”W x 29”H and weighs 114 lbs. Both fixtures offer an excellent dollar for full-feature 1400W intelligent moving heads. The MSRP of the Design Wash 1400E is $11,499.95. The MSRP of he Design Spot 1400E is $11,999.95.
