01.08.09 Nissan Revs It Up With Elation At LA Auto Show |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – When Nissan unveiled its all-new 370Z sports car at the LA Auto Show, the company wanted to create a roar, since this marked the first major overhaul of the “Z” since 2003. The revamped roadster was given center stage in the company’s booth, featured on a turntable under a stunning circular canopy of bright, color-changing lights.
Lightswitch (www.lightswitch.net), which designed the lighting in the Nissan booth, used Elation Professional’s Impression RGB LED compact moving head fixture to spotlight the 370Z. Additionally, Lightswitch chose another Elation light to illuminate the rest of the booth, the Design Par 575D, a DMX-compatible discharge moving head fixture with a par reflector. And just like the 370Z itself, Nissan’s show lighting received rave reviews from professionals.
According to Lightswitch principal Chris Medvitz, auto shows present unique lighting challenges. The Elation products, he said, helped his company meet the design and technical requirements of its client George P. Johnson, the experience marketing agency for Nissan North America, while satisfying the specifications posed by the Los Angeles Convention Center.
One of the biggest concerns with auto show light fixtures is weight, said Medvitz, since convention centers typically have strict hanging load requirements. “Weight is a huge issue, especially at this show, because the LA Convention Center is very limiting on how much weight they’ll allow you to hang,” said Medvitz. “So we needed fixtures that were as lightweight as possible.”
Another requirement for auto show lighting is remote focusability. Exhibits tend to get changed around from day to day, so the ease of being able to adjust the beams remotely is essential. What’s more, said Lightswitch’s production manager for Nissan Chris Wasilauskas, many auto shows have a VIP event the evening before they open to the public, then the cars arrive in the middle of the night and the booth lighting has to be totally re-focused. “You have to have all your lifts and power equipment off the floor by 7 a.m.,” said Wasilauskas. “If you have 150 lights, you’re not going to make it, unless you can focus them remotely.”
Lightswitch found a solution to both the low weight and remote focusability issues in the Elation Design Par 575D. Featuring 630° pan and 265° tilt, this par-style discharge fixture has the range and movement of a moving head unit, without unnecessary features, so it’s lighter weight (42 lbs.) and less expensive. Plus, it is remotely focusable via DMX. One-hundred and sixty Design Par 575D’s were used in the Nissan booth to light the vehicles and exhibit architecture at daylight color temperature.
“The Design Par 575D gave us the ability to remotely focus and be cost-effective compared to a typical full-featured moving light, which has a lot of things we really didn’t need, such as gobos and color-changing,” said Medvitz. “And because it doesn’t have all those features, it weighs substantially less.”
Weight was also one of the reasons Lightswitch chose the Impression to highlight the star of the booth – the Nissan 370Z. At a mere 16 lbs. and compact enough to be mounted on a 14” center, the Impression delivers the output of a 575Wdischarge lamp with 90 high-output Luxeon K2 LEDs – while consuming half as much energy. It provides smooth, fast color changes via RGB mixing, and its compact mass and state-of-the-art stepper motors allow for extremely quick movements, reaching 660° pan in less than 2 seconds.
Lightswitch installed 24 Impressions in the circular truss above the 370Z, which were used as a special effect, “constantly changing colors and moving around,” said Medvitz. “The Z has a circular badge design, so they wanted to do a circular canopy with a similar design and then have a ring of automated color-changing lights on the outside,” he explained. “The Impression was key in being able to execute this because of its light weight, along with its multi-color capability, fast speed and low wattage.”
“Given the size and weight of the Impression, I was shocked at how bright they were,” added Wasilauskas. “Being so bright and being able to do so much, its very low weight was a huge bonus for us.”
At Christie Lites (www.christielites.com) , which supplied the Impressions and Design Par 575Ds, Robert Roth reported that his company has been extremely pleased with both fixtures. “Auto shows are a demanding environment. The lights are on for long periods of time. The Design Pars worked flawlessly -- they’re extremely reliable and the quality of the light is incredibly clean.
“I was stunned at the performance of the Impression,” added Roth. “It was the first fixture I’ve seen like that that actually had enough LED output to produce a par-like beam. It’s exciting to see that we’ve got affordable reliable LED product coming out that combines great theatrical color, stunning effects, quick color changes and smooth repeatable movement with a very low fixture weight.”

01.06.09 Wireless Wonders: Elation Unveils Full-Feature 1400W Moving Heads With Built-In Wireless DMX |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES -- Today’s production and touring lighting designers are demanding bigger, more powerful lighting fixtures, and Elation Professional has responded with its new Design 1400 Series DMX-512 moving heads. Each blasting a mighty 1400W output, the series includes the Design Wash 1400E, a color wash effect, and the Design Spot 1400E, which is full of colors, gobos and animated effects.
Aside from being big and bright, these brawny bros are loaded with all the features lighting designers demand, including one of today’s hottest must-haves: wireless DMX. The Design Wash 1400E and Design Spot 1400E are each equipped with a wireless DMX receiver, built right into the unit. The units can receive DMX signals wirelessly from up to 3,000 feet that are sent via Elation’s EWDMXT wireless DMX transmitter (sold separately) or other wireless DMX transmitters made by Wireless Solution Sweden AB. From the operator’s standpoint, the DMX signals will flow reliably and without interruption, thanks to wireless system’s Adaptive Frequency Hopping Technology, which changes frequencies 1000 times per second to stay on channels that are not in use.
“Our new Design 1400 Series address two major trends that are occurring in the production, touring and rental lighting markets,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “The first is the movement toward bigger and brighter fixtures. The Design 1400 Series fixtures utilize an advanced Philips MSR 1200 Fast Fit lamp, which we can drive beyond 1200W watts to get an actual output of 1400W. The units deliver this output at an excellent value – about one-third less than you might expect to pay -- without sacrificing quality or premium features.
“This gets into the second trend we addressed with the Design 1400 Series -- ‘going wireless,’” continued Loader. “Our customers have told us they want the freedom, flexibility and convenience that wireless control gives them. With wireless DMX you can avoid long data cable runs, easily add fixtures to your rig without having to run new data lines, and work in areas where it’s not possible to run cable for one reason or another. Of course, to provide this flexibility the wireless system has to operate reliably. You can be assured that this is the case with our Design 1400 Series fixtures, because they utilize technology from Wireless Solution of Sweden, which has a 20-year proven track record in the wireless DMX control business.”
Whether operated wirelessly or linked to a conventional DMX console, the Design 1400 Series fixtures offer lighting pros all the tools and features they need to run a major production. The Design Wash 1400 is a powerful color wash featuring CMY+C color mixing, plus 2 color wheels, each featuring 4 dichroic filters plus open. It has 17 DMX channels and a flexible linear beam angle of 10°-40°.
The Design Spot 1400E is an amazing color and effects machine, featuring a CMY color mixing system along with variable CTO color correction, plus interchangeable color filters, 6 dichroic color filters, CTB + white and split colors, and a continuous Color Scrolling rainbow effect. It also includes 2 rotating gobo wheels that can be used to create the popular Gobo Morphing overlay effect, as well as a multi-color dichroic gobos that can be overlain with the color wheel to produce even more colors. A rotating animation wheel and 3 rotating prisms (3-facet, 5-facet and infinity-facet) allow users to create still more effects and combos.
An extremely versatile fixture, the 25 DMX channel Design Spot 1400E includes a full-functioning Iris with pulse effect, a 12°-32° Linear Zoom, Frost Filter on the prism effect wheel, variable speed Strobe effect and 0°-100° Dimming.
Despite its full complement of features, the Design Spot 1400E is extremely easy to service because of its convenient modular construction design. “You can easily get into the unit to replace gobos or cards,” said Loader. “The fixture is completely modular for serviceability and maintenance.”
Plus, the added full color LCD display menu offers users easier access to software features and fixture personalities. As standard with Elation’s Design Series moving heads, there is a DMX record mode, which allows users to record 4 different shows direct from the DMX console for playback on each unit. Plus, users can adjust the DMX profile attributes manually to emulate other fixtures if a show has been programmed already with another fixture type.
Recent purchasers of the Design 1400 series products include Everlast Productions in Fort Lauderdale, FL and the Berry Center in Houston, TX.
The Design Wash 1400E measures 24.8”L x 21.1”W x 22.6”H and weighs 110 lbs. The Design Spot 1400E measures 19”L x 14”W x 29”H and weighs 114 lbs. Both fixtures offer an excellent dollar for full-feature 1400W intelligent moving heads. The MSRP of the Design Wash 1400E is $11,499.95. The MSRP of he Design Spot 1400E is $11,999.95.

12.31.08 GET LOW...the Easy Way! New Antari DNG-200 Low-Lying Fogger From Elation Is Self-Contained Unit With No Dry Ice Required |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – Elation Professional has introduced a convenient low-lying fog effect machine that doesn’t require dry ice or any connections to external units. The company’s new Antari DNG-200 Low Fog Generator is an easy-to-use, self-contained unit that produces a continuous output of low-lying fog while running on X-Fog Ice fog fluid.
Featuring a high-quality 3M fog conducting hose, the DNG-200 creates low-lying fog straight from its nozzle, just like a regular fog machine. With no CO2 installation to hassle with, the DMX-controllable DNG-200 is extremely operator-friendly, making it a great ground fog effect solution for theatrical, studio and production applications -- wherever a blast of even, smooth low-hanging fog is needed.
“Until now, most low-lying fog machines had to use dry ice to generate fog that stays close to the ground,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional, the exclusive distributor for Antari products in North America. “Another alternative was to buy a ‘fog chiller’ machine that hooked up to your regular fogger and converted its output to ground-type fog. The DNG-200 eliminates both the inconvenience of messy dry ice and the extra step of external connections. Just plug it in and operate it like a regular fog machine, and it will produce high-quality low-lying fog that is indistinguishable from the effect created by dry ice.”
Built to Antari’s world-class standards, the DNG-200 features a powerful compressor and aluminum heater block, allowing it to produce continuous, non-stop fog at a rate of 40,000 cubic feet per minute. Operators can select from 3 variable outputs, ranging from a wispy cloud to thick “pea soup” fog. Both the volume and timing of fog output can be controlled via DMX or the built-in timer controller.
The low-lying fog can be spread evenly over large distances, thanks to the DNG-200’s brawny, yet quiet, fan. Because the fan operates in virtual silence, the unit is ideal for theatrical and studio applications where a minimal noise level is required. Another convenient feature is the DNG-200’s large-capacity 10-liter tank, which will keep the fog flowing during performances and productions without interruption for refills.
Designed to be portable for touring applications, the DNG-200 sits on wheels and includes integrated handles for convenient transport. Its solid, sturdy metal case was built to withstand the rigors of the road, protecting the machine from damage, for years of productive use -- and a great value.
Users of the DNG-200 will save on energy costs, too. The fogger includes a highly efficient power control system, along with superior ventilation, which keep it operating at the lowest possible temperature to reduce power consumption and lower electric bills.
The DNG-200 features both 120V and 220V operation. This makes it more versatile, allowing it to be used for non-theatrical performances where 220 voltage isn’t accessible. The unit’s fluid consumption rate is one liter per 9 minutes at 100% output at AC100V-120V/50-Hz-60Hz operation, and one liter per 5 minutes at 100% output AC220V-240V/50Hz-60Hz. Elation X-Fog Ice is recommended for use with the DNG-200.
A D-20 Remote Control and 3M Fog Conducting Hose come included with the DNG-200. The fogger measures 30.7”L x 24”W x 27”H and weighs 265 lbs. The MSRP of the Antari DNG-200 Low Fog Generator is $10,999.95.

View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES --When budgets get tighter, resourceful lighting designers look to get more versatility out of the products they purchase. Enter the new Design Beam 300E from Elation Professional. This rugged, reliable and user-friendly 300-watt DMX-compatible moving head does triple duty as a spot, wash or long throw effect, giving you the best of three worlds for the price of one.
What’s more, the Design Beam 300E can perform all three functions reliably with no messy wires attached! That’s because this innovative fixture includes a built-in wireless DMX receiver (EWDMX), allowing it to be controlled wirelessly by Elation’s WDMXT transmitter.
The newest member of Elation’s Design 300 Series of compact-size, high-output moving heads, the Design Beam 300E is equipped with a 300-watt Fast Fit Phillips lamp. Its high-output concentrated light effect of 33,000 lux delivers crystal clear illumination as a spot or a wash. A very tight narrow fixed beam angle of 7.5° gives the fixture’s bright light even more impact. Aside from its brilliant light output, the fixture’s Philips lamp is also easy to change. A 32-character digital LCD display also contributes to the Design Beam 300E’s user-friendliness.
Lighting professionals will find that the Design Beam 300E’s versatile features list gives them greater flexibility to bring their creative visions to life -- from washing a background wall, to spotlighting a stage or house of worship service, to throwing vividly colored light over a dance floor. The fixture features CMY color mixing, 8 static replaceable dichroic colors, 6 rotating indexing gobos, a rotating indexing prism, variable frost, a dimmer/strobe and 18 DMX channels. “The market is really demanding more versatility from lighting designers today,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “It doesn’t matter what area of lighting they’re working in -- stage, club, house of worship, or anything else -- lighting designers are being asked to accomplish more with fewer fixtures.
“The Design Beam 300E addresses this trend in a very quality-driven way. It not only does a lot of different things, it does them all well. Plus it offers wireless DMX control, which is a feature that’s very much in demand by lighting users today.”
The Design Beam 300E is ETL listed. Featuring a lightweight electronic ballast, it weighs 56 lbs. and measures 17” x 17.6” x 20”. The MSRP of the Design Beam 300E is $4,999.95

11.18.08 Jackson Browne Tours Green With LEDs From Elation and American DJ |
View>> |
Description:
LOS ANGELES – Jackson Browne launched his 2008-2009 world tour in support of his first album of new material in six years, Time The Conqueror. But the LP’s critically acclaimed tracks aren’t the only new thing in the singer-songwriter’s show -- the current tour marks the first time that Browne is using LED lighting on his stage.
Lighting director Dave Davidian put together a rig that includes 20 Elation Impression LED moving heads and 180 American DJ 64B LED Pro par cans. According to Davidian, Browne himself was “pivotal” in the decision to switch to LEDs.
“Jackson was very pro-active in looking for LEDs, because he’s a very green-oriented person,” said Davidian, who has worked for Browne since 1990. “He felt this would be a way to save power and do the right thing as far as his beliefs were concerned. For myself, I was curious about LEDs too.”
Davidian selected products from Elation and its sister company American DJ on the basis of recommendation from his supplier, Bandit Lites. “I have a lot of faith in Bandit. They suggested Elation as the way to go, because the products have both economy and integrity built into them,” he said.
An extremely compact DMX moving head with RGB color mixing, the Impression utilizes 90 high-power Luxeon K2 red, green and blue LEDs to produce a light output equivalent to a 575W discharge fixture -- at a 50% lower energy consumption. Weighing just 16 lbs. and small enough to be mounted on a 14” center, the Impression offers an amazing output-lumen-to-physical-weight ratio. Its compact moving mass and state-of-the-art stepper motors give it great speed and range, with the capability of reaching 660° pan in 2 seconds and 300° tilt in 1 second.
The American DJ 64B LED Pro par can, also featuring RGB color mixing, is a big energy saver as well. Powered by 181 10mm red, green and blue LEDs, its output is as bright as a par 64 halogen lamp, yet it draws only 30W of power. Both the Impression and 64B LED Pro have very low maintenance requirements, since their LED lamps last for 100,000 hours under normal operating conditions. Additionally, both LED fixtures are performer-friendly, emitting almost no heat onto the stage.
Along with their energy savings and other user benefits, the Impression and 64B LED Pro fit perfectly into Davidian’s lighting gameplan for the Jackson Browne show. The artist’s set is relatively simple in design, and the LD’s primary goal was to “get a variety of different angles of light on Jackson – to get light sources at vertical and horizontal angles and different heights, so that I could make the most of a small physical system and create as many layers and angles of light as I possibly could.”
To do this, Davidian constructed a rig with two upside down “U” truss configurations, one on each the left and right rear of the stage, with a straight bar of truss in the center between them. The trussing is lined up and down the sides and across the top with nearly 200 64B LED Pro par cans. Using so many cans provides “strength in numbers,” said Davidian, a design made viable in part by the 64B LED Pro’s low power draw and low heat production.
The 20 Impression moving heads serve as backlights and sidelights. “The brightness of the Impression is fantastic,” said Davidian. “The colors are stunningly beautiful – better than dichroic – and they do some great color dissolves.” Additionally, the movement of the Impressions helps achieve his goal of having “as much flexibility with angles and light source points as possible.”
With their compact size and light weight, the Impressions also serve to make life easier on a rigorous tour, which after completing its first U.S. leg, is heading overseas to Japan, Australia and Europe. “The Impressions are easy to transport and setup, and very reliable” said Davidian, adding, “Jackson thinks the lighting looks great. All the comments from both people and the press have been very positive about how the show looks.”

10.29.08 Elation Unveils Breakthrough LED-Powered White Fresnel Stage Light |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – Perhaps no stage lighting fixture has been more popular and enduring over the years than the basic Fresnel spotlight. Now Elation Professional has taken this timeless theatrical classic into the 21st century with the introduction of the ELED Fresnel, a modern-day version of the white Fresnel stage light that’s powered by LEDs.
Instead of the traditional halogen lamp, the ELED Fresnel utilizes a 50W, 6,000k white LED module as its light source. This module, comprised of a cluster of white LEDs, emits an extremely high output that’s equivalent to a 500W halogen lamp. Yet because of the amazing energy efficiency of LEDs, the ELED Fresnel draws a total of only 75W of power, allowing theaters and productions to save big on their energy bills.
In addition to energy savings, incorporating LED technology into a Fresnel luminaire offers other significant advantages. For one, because LEDs generate little or no heat, the ELED Fresnel will keep the temperature much cooler on stage, allowing performers to stay more comfortable under the “bright lights.” Users won’t have to deal with the hassle and expense of frequent lamp replacements either, because the ELED Fresnel’s long-life LEDs are rated at 100,000 hours under normal operating conditions.
“An LED-powered Fresnel is an idea whose time has definitely come, and it’s something our customers have been asking for,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “There will always be a huge demand in the theatrical market for a basic Fresnel to use as a white light or to put your own custom color filter on. Our new ELED Fresnel is such a straightforward Fresnel, but it’s also more than that because it offers the advantages of LED technology, such as cool operation, low maintenance and energy efficiency. With its advanced LED light source, it’s definitely not your father’s Fresnel!”
The ELED Fresnel is also advanced in the many professional features it offers, giving users the tools to light up any type of stage performance. It features a built-in strobe and 0-100% electronic dimming. It also comes equipped with a 10° to 50° manual zoom for zeroing in on individual performers. Additionally, the unit includes adjustable barn doors, for a variety of flat, square and circular beam shaping options.
Internal DMX control gives operators complete command over dimming and strobing. Another convenient feature is a bright, easy-to-navigate LCD Menu Display on the rear of the unit.
The ELED Fresnel comes with both 3-pin and 5-pin DMX connection, and it includes a multi-voltage internal power supply. The unit measures 14.5”L x 9.84”W x 14.5”H, and weighs 11.6 lbs. The MSRP of the ELED Fresnel is $899.95.

According to Everlast president Washington Arias, his company is gearing up for its role as an Elation Service Center by opening two new offices in Tampa and Orlando, which will provide even greater convenience to customers. Service customers from these areas will be able to drop-off and pick-up Elation products at the new branch offices, and Everlast will ship them to and from its Dania Beach repair center at no charge to the client.
Everlast technicians recently spent a week at Elation’s Los Angeles facility, where they underwent a comprehensive training program on the lighting manufacturer’s products and service procedures. The company’s staff was already very familiar with many Elation lights, having used them in projects, including the new Design Wash 1400E moving head wash, which they recently added in quantity to their rental inventory.
So “sold” on the Design Wash 1400E is Everlast, that the company has produced a YouTube product demonstration on it, which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxsBvk-qxds . The video demonstrates “Everlast’s strong hands-on knowledge of Elation products like the Design Wash 1400E and its overall commitment to Elation,” said Loader. “We feel that this is an excellent partnership.”
After significantly upgrading its internal service/support mechanism, Elation now feels confident that it can replicate the process at outside service centers like Everlast and that it has the capability to support these facilities, Loader added. “While this is the first remote service center on line, we do have future plans to open more authorized service centers around the country, to support the growing demand for our products in the market. We also plan to launch a dealer technical training program next year, which will allow dealers to do on-site repairs for their product purchases under warranty. This is all part of Elation’s strong commitment to backing our products with the highest level of customer service in the industry.”

10.02.08 Melissa Etheridge Goes Green (& All Other Colors!) With Elation's Impression |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES -- She won an Academy Award for her song featured in Al Gore’s film on global warming. . . she posts “Green Tips” on her website. . . Melissa Etheridge makes no secret about her concern for the environment. So it’s only fitting that for her 2008 Revival Tour, Etheridge’s lighting director David Hamilton switched to a new LED fixture that saves huge amounts of energy, yet is so incredibly bright that a handful of units can light up an entire concert stage. The new fixture also creates less waste, since its lamps last for 100,000 hours, generating less throwaway for landfills.
That “green” fixture is the Impression from Elation Professional, a compact LED moving head with RGB color mixing. Powered by 90 high-power Luxeon K2 red, green and blue LEDs, the Impression produces a light output that’s at least as bright as a 575W discharge fixture with no less than a 50% power savings.
Etheridge’s tour manager Steve Girmont first saw the Impression at a trade show and brought it to the attention of Hamilton. “We were wanting to go LED-heavy (for the Revival Tour) because of the low energy usage,” said Hamilton, who has been Etheridge’s LD since 2004. “So I checked out the Impression at Bandit Lites and did a comparison with several other LED pars. The Impression just blew all the others out of the water. There was a night and day difference between it and everything else I looked at – it was like the difference between a 500W and 1000W par can.”
In addition to its brightness, Hamilton was pleased to see that the Impression covered more area than other LED par cans. “The beam spread on the Impression is substantially larger,” he said.
Thanks to these attributes, Hamilton was able to light up Etheridge’s stage with a total of only 10 Impressions. The set featured a large overhead L-shaped truss that ran 40’ upstage, with a perpendicular 20’ segment at stage left. Four Impression units were hung on the 40’ segment and three on the 20’ side truss. The remaining three Impressions were positioned on the ground at stage right. Between the overhead and uplighting units, “we kind of did an angle thing, and it covered the whole stage really, really well. Ten Impressions were all I needed,” Hamilton said. One of the plans for minimizing energy consumption on the Revival Tour, he added, was to keep the lighting rig as small as possible piece-wise, and the Impression was ideal for accomplishing this goal.
Performance-wise, too, the Impressions were a perfect match for a Melissa Etheridge concert, which “is not a flash and trash show,” Hamilton noted. “Basically we light the band and light the scenery. It’s subtle looks – Melissa wants the music to do the talking.” With lots of slow color fades, the Impression was perfect for the job, because it offers completely flicker-free operation. “There was absolutely no flicker – zero – which was something I was really impressed with.”
Since her bout with breast cancer, the singer-songwriter no longer uses hazers, being concerned about the effects of the smoke. Here too, the Impression was up to the task, since its powerful Luxeon K2 LEDs are high enough in output to create rich, brilliant colors without fog or haze.
Hamilton also praised the compact size of the Impression, which is small enough to be mounted on a 14” center and weighs only 16 lbs. “I could carry all (the Impressions) around in two small cases and could hang them by myself – they’re so lightweight.”
Another feature that caught Hamilton’s attention was the Impression’s great speed of movement. Featuring state-of-the-art stepper motors, along with its compact moving mass, the fixture can reach 660° pan in less than two seconds and 300° tilt in under one second. “The speed on those things was phenomenal,” said Hamilton. “I didn’t have much chance to use it in this show, but it will be great for future projects where a lot of speed and movement is needed.
“I definitely will be spec-ing the Impression in future shows,” he added. “It’s my favorite new light – by far!”
