10.07.08 Elation Opens East Coast Service Center In Partnership With Everlast Productions |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – Lighting manufacturer Elation Professional has announced that Everlast Productions, based in Dania Beach, FL, will serve as its East Coast Service Center. The move will enable customers on the East Coast to have warranty and non-warranty authorized repairs on Elation products performed at Everlast by factory trained technicians.
“We’re confident that this association will result in better service to Elation customers on the East Coast and faster turnaround on repairs,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “Everlast is a highly regarded production company with experience in a wide range of lighting applications, and they share our strong dedication to quality and service.”
Specializing in corporate events, outdoor events, night clubs, trade shows, HOW installations, hotels, stadiums, museums and more, Everlast Productions provides comprehensive event lighting, design services and event production services. Its long list of clients includes such prestigious names as Lexus, Comcast, Bank of America, Bacardi, MTV, NASCAR and the Orange Bowl Committee.
According to Everlast president Washington Arias, his company is gearing up for its role as an Elation Service Center by opening two new offices in Tampa and Orlando, which will provide even greater convenience to customers. Service customers from these areas will be able to drop-off and pick-up Elation products at the new branch offices, and Everlast will ship them to and from its Dania Beach repair center at no charge to the client.
Everlast technicians recently spent a week at Elation’s Los Angeles facility, where they underwent a comprehensive training program on the lighting manufacturer’s products and service procedures. The company’s staff was already very familiar with many Elation lights, having used them in projects, including the new Design Wash 1400E moving head wash, which they recently added in quantity to their rental inventory.
So “sold” on the Design Wash 1400E is Everlast, that the company has produced a YouTube product demonstration on it, which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxsBvk-qxds . The video demonstrates “Everlast’s strong hands-on knowledge of Elation products like the Design Wash 1400E and its overall commitment to Elation,” said Loader. “We feel that this is an excellent partnership.”
After significantly upgrading its internal service/support mechanism, Elation now feels confident that it can replicate the process at outside service centers like Everlast and that it has the capability to support these facilities, Loader added. “While this is the first remote service center on line, we do have future plans to open more authorized service centers around the country, to support the growing demand for our products in the market. We also plan to launch a dealer technical training program next year, which will allow dealers to do on-site repairs for their product purchases under warranty. This is all part of Elation’s strong commitment to backing our products with the highest level of customer service in the industry.”

10.02.08 Melissa Etheridge Goes Green (& All Other Colors!) With Elation's Impression |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES -- She won an Academy Award for her song featured in Al Gore’s film on global warming. . . she posts “Green Tips” on her website. . . Melissa Etheridge makes no secret about her concern for the environment. So it’s only fitting that for her 2008 Revival Tour, Etheridge’s lighting director David Hamilton switched to a new LED fixture that saves huge amounts of energy, yet is so incredibly bright that a handful of units can light up an entire concert stage. The new fixture also creates less waste, since its lamps last for 100,000 hours, generating less throwaway for landfills.
That “green” fixture is the Impression from Elation Professional, a compact LED moving head with RGB color mixing. Powered by 90 high-power Luxeon K2 red, green and blue LEDs, the Impression produces a light output that’s at least as bright as a 575W discharge fixture with no less than a 50% power savings.
Etheridge’s tour manager Steve Girmont first saw the Impression at a trade show and brought it to the attention of Hamilton. “We were wanting to go LED-heavy (for the Revival Tour) because of the low energy usage,” said Hamilton, who has been Etheridge’s LD since 2004. “So I checked out the Impression at Bandit Lites and did a comparison with several other LED pars. The Impression just blew all the others out of the water. There was a night and day difference between it and everything else I looked at – it was like the difference between a 500W and 1000W par can.”
In addition to its brightness, Hamilton was pleased to see that the Impression covered more area than other LED par cans. “The beam spread on the Impression is substantially larger,” he said.
Thanks to these attributes, Hamilton was able to light up Etheridge’s stage with a total of only 10 Impressions. The set featured a large overhead L-shaped truss that ran 40’ upstage, with a perpendicular 20’ segment at stage left. Four Impression units were hung on the 40’ segment and three on the 20’ side truss. The remaining three Impressions were positioned on the ground at stage right. Between the overhead and uplighting units, “we kind of did an angle thing, and it covered the whole stage really, really well. Ten Impressions were all I needed,” Hamilton said. One of the plans for minimizing energy consumption on the Revival Tour, he added, was to keep the lighting rig as small as possible piece-wise, and the Impression was ideal for accomplishing this goal.
Performance-wise, too, the Impressions were a perfect match for a Melissa Etheridge concert, which “is not a flash and trash show,” Hamilton noted. “Basically we light the band and light the scenery. It’s subtle looks – Melissa wants the music to do the talking.” With lots of slow color fades, the Impression was perfect for the job, because it offers completely flicker-free operation. “There was absolutely no flicker – zero – which was something I was really impressed with.”
Since her bout with breast cancer, the singer-songwriter no longer uses hazers, being concerned about the effects of the smoke. Here too, the Impression was up to the task, since its powerful Luxeon K2 LEDs are high enough in output to create rich, brilliant colors without fog or haze.
Hamilton also praised the compact size of the Impression, which is small enough to be mounted on a 14” center and weighs only 16 lbs. “I could carry all (the Impressions) around in two small cases and could hang them by myself – they’re so lightweight.”
Another feature that caught Hamilton’s attention was the Impression’s great speed of movement. Featuring state-of-the-art stepper motors, along with its compact moving mass, the fixture can reach 660° pan in less than two seconds and 300° tilt in under one second. “The speed on those things was phenomenal,” said Hamilton. “I didn’t have much chance to use it in this show, but it will be great for future projects where a lot of speed and movement is needed.
“I definitely will be spec-ing the Impression in future shows,” he added. “It’s my favorite new light – by far!”

09.17.08 Elation's Opti Tri Par Brings Breakthrough Tri-Color LED Technology to Popular Stage Light |
View>> |
Description: TRI-ing Harder!
Elation’s Opti Tri Par Brings Breakthrough
Tri-Color LED Technology To Popular Stage Light
LOS ANGELES – Some might call it the best of both worlds -- Elation Professional has combined its breakthrough Tri-Color LED Technology with its popular compact-profile Opti stage par can, introducing the new Opti Tri Par. A trim, DMX-controllable high-output RGB theatrical light with 18 x 3W LEDs, the Opti Tri Par will outshine bigger, more energy-hungry par cans in theaters, churches, concerts, productions, displays, runways – anywhere color-changing stage lighting is needed.
Thanks to its cutting-edge Tri-Color LED Technology, the Opti Tri Par produces superior mixed colors to those created by conventional LED RGB par cans. Each of the Opti Tri Par’s 3W LEDs is actually a 3-in-1 lamp, comprised of 3 different-colored LEDs -- 1W red, 1W green and 1W blue. This tri-color lamp design, which is exclusive to Elation, allows RGB colors to be created within each individual lens, so that all 18 lamps remain on during the color-mixing process. The result is smoother, more even mixed colors, without the distracting multi-color shadows that tend to appear around objects illuminated by RGB fixtures with single-color LED lamps. br>
“We are very pleased to offer our popular Opti stage light with new, advanced Tri-Color LED Technology,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “This technology is a vast improvement over single-color LED RGB fixtures, where if you were mixing, say, the color magenta, only the red and blue lamps would be on and the green lamps would be turned off. By contrast, if you were creating magenta with the Opti Tri Par, all 18 lamps would remain on and only the green LED within each lamp would be off. One look is all it takes is to notice the huge difference this makes in the quality of the mixed colors, enhanced clarity and amplified brightness.”
Another advantage of tri-color technology is that it creates a better range of white colors. Thus, it was not necessary to add an amber or white LED to the Opti Tri Par, which would have limited its primary color output, and it’s another reason for the unit’s superior brightness. Featuring flicker-free operation, along with its evenly-blended colors and high-quality whites, the Opti Tri Par is ideal for video production, too.
Although its tri-color technology is brand-new, the Opti Tri Par features the same uniquely-shaped compact design that has made Elation’s Opti Series par cans so popular. It measures just 11.5”L x 8.5”W x 8.5”H and weighs only 11 lbs., allowing it to fit into tight spaces and be transported with ease. Housed in a rugged die cast case, it’s durable enough to stand up to the rigorous demands of road use and rental applications. Additionally, with ETL approval pending, the Opti Tri Par will soon be suitable for installations where certification is required.
The Opti Tri Par can be operated in two DMX modes – 3-channel or 7-channel – as well as in Stand Alone and Master/Slave modes. It includes a dimmer, variable strobe and built-in color macros to match popular gel colors. All are selectable via the LCD 4 button display on the fixture.
Although it can produce an infinite range of eye-popping colors, the Opti Tri Par is strictly “green” when it comes to energy savings. Consuming only 54W total power, it will significantly cut electricity costs when used in place of conventional par cans. An extremely cool operating temperature is another big advantage of the Opti Tri Par’s LED technology.
The Opti Tri Par includes 5-pin DMX connections, “locking” IEC power cord, multi-voltage power supply, ¼” jack for remote blackout / footswitch option and a versatile dual yoke bracket for hanging or floor mounting. The MSRP of the Opti Tri Par is $999.95.

09.09.08 John Mayer’s Stage Is A Wonderland Thanks To Elation’s Impression |
View>> |
Description:
LOS ANGELES – When John Mayer drew up plans for his 2008 Summer Tour, the singer-guitarist-songwriter expressed a strong desire to get back to his musical roots and make the show more “organic.”
“On previous tours, we had video in the show,” recalled lighting designer Michael Keller. “But John decided he was tired of doing video. We were going to go more straightforward rock ’n roll – the type of feeling where you’re watching a band, not video. John wanted to keep everything very organic.”
Keller, who has been Mayer’s LD for three years, achieved the desired stage impression –- and other organic benefits, too -- with Elation Professional’s Impression intelligent LED moving head. An extremely small and compact, yet high-output, RGB color-changing fixture, the Impression is the main lighting unit being used on the 30-city tour, which plays at 10,000-20,000-seat indoor and outdoor venues.
“You might think an LED is the opposite of what ‘organic’ is,” noted Keller, “but the Impression is such a versatile fixture that you can get some very organic, true saturation colors with it.” This marks the first time he has used LED-powered fixtures to light John Mayer’s shows, added Keller, who initially discovered the Impression while visiting the Prockl Company, a lighting company in Europe. “I saw these little units and wondered, ‘What are these?’ Then I turned them on and it was like, wow, these things put out a lot of light! It was the first LED fixture I’ve ever dealt with that actually puts out a shaft of light, so I was quite impressed.”
Powered by 90 high-performance Luxeon K2 LEDs (30 each red, green and blue), each Impression unit delivers an output comparable to or exceeding a 575W discharge fixture. Yet, it’s small enough to be mounted on a 14” center and weighs a mere 16 lbs., giving it an enormous output-lumen-to-physical weight ratio. What’s more, it offers a 50% or better energy savings over traditional 575W fixtures, thanks to its high output of 60 lumens per watt.
Keller used a total of 34 Impressions on the Mayer set. Each of the 6 band positions is illuminated by 4 overhead units, 2 at the back and 2 on the sides. The remaining 10 units are mounted 8’ high in a back row behind the band.
The LD reports he has been very impressed with the brightness and wide spectrum of RGB colors produced by the units. “I’m getting much more output and a better color range than I ever could (with previous non-LED fixtures),” Keller said. “I have an audience focus, and the 24 (overhead) units are bright enough to light the majority of the audience, too. I was very, very impressed with that. I can light the audience with a deep saturated color or a really bright color.” Another feature he really likes is that “it gives you a full range of white color – probably the best white color I’ve seen on RGB fixtures without utilizing a white LED.”
Speed is yet another of the Impression’s attributes that has served well at John Mayer concerts. The fixture’s compact moving mass, combined with state-of-the-art stepper motors, give it the capability of reaching 660° pan in 2 seconds and 300° tilt in 1 second, with extremely smooth and fluid movements. “John improvises so often, so what’s really nice about the lights is that they’re so quick, I can get them into a new position right away,” said Keller.
The 10 Impression units positioned behind the band are used to create a more laid-back atmosphere during Mayer’s frequent forays into blues. “When we’re doing things like blues numbers, I like to bring it down to a real intimate club vibe, and the Impressions along the back of the stage have worked really well to give us this feeling,” Keller said.
Along with John Mayer’s desired organic look, the Impressions have brought another organic aspect to the tour – energy conservation. With its low power draw versus output, “the Impression is truly a ‘green’ fixture,” said Keller. “I’m saving a lot of electricity with it. John’s aware of what we’re using and he really likes the idea.”

08.21.08 Elation/Acclaim LEDs Help Rascal Flatts Connect With Fans |
View>> |
Description: Elation/Acclaim LEDs Help Rascal Flatts Connect With Fans
LOS ANGELES – The winner of ACM’s Vocal Group of the Year 2007, Rascal Flatts has always enjoyed an extremely close relationship with its fans. Nowhere is this more apparent than at the country trio’s concerts, during which Joe Don, Gary and Jay frequently walk into the audience, and even bring fans up on stage to participate in the show.
Rascal Flatts wanted to get even closer to its fans – literally and figuratively – during its current 2008 “The Bob That Head” Tour. So the group called on All Access Staging & Productions (Torrance, CA) to create a set that would make it easy to interact with the audience. “They basically had a T thrust on their last set, and this year they wanted one that would extend even further out into the audience,” said project manager Mike Bell of All Access Staging, which had constructed sets for Rascal Flatts in the past.
Working with set designer Bruce Rodgers of Tribe Inc. and lighting designer Andy Knighton of Bandit Lites, All Access created “one of the most complicated sets I’ve worked on,” said Bell. Featuring an intricate 32’ high spiral staircase as a backdrop and a 48’ x 68’ main stage with a multi-level layout, the set incorporates a runway-style rectangular thrust that wraps around four spectator egresses to provide audience access. Five elevated risers serve as platforms for the instrumental players, while numerous stairways, ramps, bridges connect the various sections and levels of the set, giving the band the freedom to move deep into the audience and back to the main stage.
To tie together all of these divergent horizontal and vertical elements, All Access relied on nearly 1,000 color-changing LED fixtures from Elation Professional and Acclaim Lighting. The massive number of lights are used to outline and highlight the thrust, risers, stairways and other elements, giving the set a cohesive look, while creating a breathtakingly stunning visual experience.
Some 730 Acclaim X-Cubes alone are installed on the set. A compact, rectangular cube-shaped RGB LED fixture, the X-Cube is used along the perimeters of the thrust and those of the risers where the instrumental players are positioned. Spaced 1’ apart on the elevated risers, the X-Cubes serve to “draw attention to the risers and the backline guys,” said Bell. X-Cubes are also used to highlight three diamond-shaped decks that sit on top of two elevated audience egress bridges and on the front of the main stage, and a fourth square-shaped deck at the front of the thrust.
The top surface of the entire thrust is outlined with Acclaim X-Tubes on each side. A linear RGB LED strip, the X-Tubes – more than 125 in total -- are placed end-to-end so that they appear as an uninterrupted “running light” along the sides of the thrust “to really give it a runway look,” said Bell.
Octostrip LEDs from Acclaim’s sister company Elation Professional dramatically illuminate the treads of the many stairways on the set. These include: two large staircases that lead down from the 32’ silo to the main stage; four additional “screamer” staircases that surround the main stage; and eight sets of stairs that lead up and down from the elevated decks on the thrust. A 39” RGB LED strip, more than 100 Octostrip units are used on the stairways.
“The Octostrips really give a lot of focus to the steps, making them more than just a functional part of the set,” said Bell. “The stairs look so cool all lit up, they become an integrated part of the design.”
Across the entire Rascal Flatts set, added Bell, the Elation and Acclaim LEDs serve to tie together the various complex elements into one cohesive whole. “The lights connect the walkways to the stage, and the stage to the risers. The lights are programmed so that they all flow together. They’re so impressive that you don’t necessarily see them as a light on its own, but as part of the entire visual product. I think they even exceeded our expectations as to what they were going to look like.”
In addition to their spectacular appearance, the Elation/Acclaim LEDs have stood up to the rigors of Rascal Flatts’ virtually non-stop touring schedule, reported Bell. “It’s the nature of touring that things get thrown in the back of a truck. You just can’t think of a more destructive way of handling product – and the lights have held up very well.” What’s more, Bell said, with so many lights on the set, the long lifespan of the LEDs has proven to be a lifesaver. Rated at 50,000 hours, they rarely need replacing.
Another benefit of the Elation/Acclaim products is their economical price tag. They have contributed to the overall cost-effectiveness of the Rascal Flatts set, according to Bell and All Access’s president and creative sales director Erik Eastland. “We really think that we have provided a durable, functional, world-class set at a reasonable price, and this is proof that you don’t have to pay the big bucks to get a product that is both beautiful and custom,” said Eastland.

07.28.08 Strong and Silent: Elation Introduces Advanced Antari HZ-500 DMX Professional Hazer |
View>> |
Description: LOS ANGELES – Elation Professional has added the top-of-the-line Antari HZ-500 professional DMX haze machine to its lineup of Antari atmosphere effects. One of the most advanced and powerful hazers on the market today, the HZ-500 is designed to provide creative and dramatic atmospheric effects for concert tours, stage productions and large clubs, with a prolific haze output of 3,000 cubic feet/minute. Yet, it is extremely quiet, easy to maintain and consumes relatively little haze liquid, while offering exceptional performance.
Despite its mighty output, the HZ-500 runs tremendously quietly, with a noise level of under 70dB at a 4-inch distance. The virtual silence of the HZ-500 enables it to be used in situations where low noise is desired, such as a stage production where microphones might otherwise pick up the sound of a motor running backstage.
An extremely efficient machine, the HZ-500 uses only one liter of haze liquid over 20 hours, despite its 3,000 cu. ft./minute output, making it a very economical hazer to operate. What’s more, this low consumption rate means that the HZ-500’s 2.5-liter tank needs to be filled less frequently, a convenient feature for users -- allowing the show to go on for longer periods without interruptions for adding more haze liquid.
One of the reasons the HZ-500 has such a low liquid consumption rate is because it produces a high-quality haze that’s comprised of extremely small particles. This type of haze spreads over a wider area faster and farther, and because the smaller particles are lighter in weight, the haze stays higher in the air and lasts longer before dissipating. The HZ-500 also produces a drier fog than that of many other hazers, preventing residual moisture that can lead to wet, slick surfaces, which are not only undesirable but can be a safety hazard, as well.
Another advantage of the HZ-500 is that it starts producing haze immediately after it is turned on, with no warm-up time required. This is because the HZ-500 uses an air compressor to produce haze, rather than the heater found in many other hazers, so it does not have to wait to reach a certain temperature for the effects to kick in.
A common problem with hazers and foggers is clogging of the intake valve. Antari has addressed this issue by including a metal net and filter in the HZ-500’s intake valve to prevent particles from entering and damaging the machine – a feature that dramatically reduces service problems. The net and filter are easily detached from the hazer for cleaning, requiring only a quick rinse in plain water – no soap or detergents are necessary – to be good as new.
“The Antari HZ-500 raises the bar for professional hazers with many new, outstanding features and innovations,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional, which is the exclusive North American distributor for Antari atmospheric machines. “Not only is it a very high output unit, it also offers unsurpassed performance, producing smaller and drier haze particles that last longer and are of higher quality. It’s also very quiet, economical to operate, and easy to maintain. The Antari brand is known as the premium world-class fog machine, and the HZ-500 takes this distinction to an even higher standard.”
As befitting a top-of-the-line hazer, the HZ-500 comes fully equipped and ready to go in its own flight case, which comes included with the machine. The convenient, rugged case makes the hazer easy to carry and protects it against the rigors of travel.
Compatible with any standard DMX_512 controller, the HZ-500 includes on on-board 5-pin DMX connector. This enables it to work in tandem with other effects and lighting fixtures to produce an easily coordinated visual show.
The HZ-500 features an LCD timer panel controller. The unit weighs 69.5 lbs. and measures 20”L x 14.75”W x 13.75”H. It should be used only with Antari HZL-1 Haze Liquid.
The MSRP of the Antari HZ-500 hazer is $2,499.95.

07.22.08 Elation Introduces Opti 16-4 WW/CW LED Par Can |
View>> |
Description: Energy Lite Whites
Elation Introduces Opti 16-4 WW/CW LED Par Can
In ‘Warm White’ And ‘Cool White’ Versions
LOS ANGELES — With the introduction of the Opti 16-4 WW and Opti 16-4 CW, Elation Professional now offers a compact yet powerful LED plug-and-play par can in both “warm white” and “cool white” LED versions. A great power-saving alternative to traditional Par 16 cans, both versions of the Opti 16-4 produce an incredibly bright output that’s equivalent to a 50W halogen MR lamp, yet draw only 7W at full use, making them especially well-suited for today’s era of rapidly rising energy costs.
The secret to this efficiency is in the Opti 16-4 WW/CW’s four high-output 1W LEDs, which are bright enough to flood any stage, production set or exhibit in warm or cool white light, whichever the mood calls for. The Opti 16-4 WW (3000K) or “warm white” version measures 229 LUX at a distance of 6.6 feet, while the Opti 16-4 CW (6000K) or “cool white” model measures 359 LUX at 6.6 feet.
In addition to being energy-efficient, the Opti 16-4 WW/CW’s LED lamps have an extremely long lifespan. Rated at 50,000 hours, they save users the time and expense of lamp replacement. Because LEDs produce no infrared or ultraviolet light, the Opti-16-4 WW/CW also offers the advantage of having a cooler running temperature than halogen par cans, keeping performers on stage more comfortable and eliminating the risk of heat damage to illuminated objects.
“With all of its LED advantages, the Opti 16-4 represents a vast improvement over the standard white halogen par can,” said Eric Loader, director of sales for Elation Professional. “Being available in both warm and cool white versions, and with its plug-and-play theatrical case design, this exciting new ‘basic’ is great for a wide variety of uses – event productions, theaters, churches, staging, exhibits, indoor architectural applications, video production, you name it.”
The Opti 16-4 WW/CW’s versatility, low maintenance, rugged construction and easy portability make it an excellent choice for rental companies, too. The convection-cooled unit is housed in damage-resistant die-cast aluminum for maximum protection from the rigors of the road. Extremely compact and lightweight, the Opti 16-4 WW/CW measures just 4.75”L x 3.25”W x 3.25”H and weighs only 1.76 lbs. Its small size makes it easy to transport and allows it to fit into virtually any space.
Both versions of the Opti 16-4 are dimmable from 0–100% when used with a standard dimmer, and have their beams set at an ideal angle of 25°. Each unit includes a gel frame for use with a color or diffusion filter and comes with a molded 120V AC plug for power input.
Extremely affordable, the Opti 16-4 WW and Opti 16-4 CW each carry a manufacturers suggested retail price of $179.95.
